2014 Dodge Durango: Tough but Civil

It has embraced a car-like, fully-independent suspension and unibody construction but retains a truck-like rear-drive bias that helps give it best-in-class towing muscle of more than three-and-a-half tons.

It comes with a standard 290-hp V-6 that provides fuel economy as high as 25 hwy mpg but still offers the option of a hairy-chested, 360-hp Hemi V-8.  It claims a best-in-class V-6 highway cruising range of more than 600 miles but offers available four-wheel vented performance disc brakes for when you've got to stop fast, even if you don't need gas.  It provides standard seven-passenger seating that includes a 50/50-split third-row bench that actually can accommodate two adults.  It is also one of the most stylish vehicles in its segment.

This redesigned 2014 edition is available in SXT, Rally, Limited, R/T and Citadel trims. You will find the ride smooth, quiet, powerful and comfortable, with loads of room and endless tech toys.  There really is no downside.   The Durango's seats-folded cargo hold is a very respectable 84.5 cubic feet.

The exterior got some updates as well.  The most obvious change is the look, highlighted by a slimmer grille, new projector-beam headlights and fog lamps and, out back, LED taillights that sweep east-to-west, just like on the Dart and Charger passenger cars.  Inside are a handsome new center stack, a customizable gauge display and a steering wheel with paddle shifters.
